Mobile security leaders such as Symantec, F-Secure, Bluefire, and MyMobiSafe have all seen increasing investment interest in their business. MyMobiSafe® founder Eric Everson discusses some of the issues that may be driving the investment push into mobile security in his article Investing In Mobile Security. The following quotes are taken from the posting:
It seems that breakthrough technology, clear value proposition, and large market opportunity are leading reasons that investors are so hungry for the mobile security industry.

While many handset owners are fearful of the security threats that [recent announcements of so many handset manufacturers trending towards open-source] represents, investors are cashing in on the opportunity.

Perhaps ... business investors [are] looking at unique technology sectors such as mobile security for their investments. [Alternatively], it could be the abundance of opportunity that exists within the mobile security industry that makes investment a sure thing.

The mobile security market is still young enough that investments could pay large dividends for investors.

The future of mobile security does not have a definite leader, so any size firm is still capable of rising to the top.

With the potential of a "Google Phone" on the horizon in one form or another, MyMobiSafe® founder Eric Everson discusses some of the key issues for cell phone owners as more manufacturers move to “unlock mobile”. His article Google Phone The Next Hacker Romance? explains why this is a significant issue in the marketplace. The following quotes are taken from the posting:
Since October 1, 2007 mobile manufacturers such as Nokia, Motorola, Apple, and yes now even Google have announced intentions to open their handsets to third-party developers. [The associated] move to “unlock mobile” [highlights an] underlying threat that this is bringing to cell phone owners.

As a result of the speed of technology rampant throughout the mobile manufacturing industry coupled with network level only security by service providers, cell phone security has been left in the hands of the handset owner.

While many of the emerging third-party developments will be pure and safe in nature, the poor state of security throughout the mobile industry will literally put millions at risk.

There are already spyware and tracking programs available throughout the mobile industry, so opening to third-party will only further open the door for these programs and threats. As the iPhone became the overnight romance of the hacker community, the Google Phone is sure to attract attention of its own. Additionally, as mobile banking is emerging throughout the world financial markets, vulnerabilities in mobile security are also being targeted.

As cell phone security has become the responsibility of the handset owner, M obile Security Providers will play a pivotal role in providing a line of cellular defense.

The Los Creador is a global nework of web entrepreneurs and founders; MyMobiSafe® founder Eric Everson was recently interviewed for a Rising Up web post acknowledging the leadership he has displayed in the world of mobile security. The following quotes are taken from a question and answer session:
Many of the threats in the mobile environment have taken shape as a result of the migration of financial data into the mobile community that has occurred over the past few years.

We [MyMobiSafe.com] identified a huge hole in the security of the mobile community and have put our resources behind providing a reliable security solution. The wireless providers place most of their concern with securing their own networks while the average cell phone owner is left vulnerable. MyMobiSafe.com has been established as a line of defense for the mobile community; we worry about the outside mobile threats so that our subscribers don’t have to.

[Eric is quoted as saying:] Once we moved past the hurdles of technology, we encountered what is likely to be our greatest obstacle, which is teaching people about our technology. I can’t tell you how many times people look at me with a dumbfounded look of surprise on their face when we start discussing the threats that have migrated into the mobile environment. Most people find it hard to grasp that the malware technology has migrated so quickly into wireless. We are focusing many of our resources into making mobile security information available to cell phone owners... We are looking forward to building key relationships with the wireless service providers and handset manufactures to get our technology out to the hundreds of millions of cell phone owners that need protection.

[Eric's expertise and experience combined to enable him to capitalize on a growing trend and to establish himself as a global leader.] I’ve always stayed close to emerging technology and when I uncovered the vulnerabilities of the wireless industry I knew it was my place to step-up. I have an incredible knowledge of the mobile industry and a passion for technology security and I’ve put everything together to form MyMobiSafe.

An article published in USA Today recently (Cell phones double as electronic wallets in Philippines) contains several key quotes underscoring the growing global importance for cell phone security at the handset level:
It's Thursday, so 18-year-old Dennis Tiangco is off to a bank to collect his weekly allowance, zapped by his mother — who's working in Hong Kong — to his electronic wallet: his cellphone. Sauntering into a branch of GM Bank in the town of San Miguel, Dennis fills out a form, sends a text message via his phone to a bank line dedicated to the service. In a matter of seconds, the transaction is approved and the teller gives him $54, minus a 1% fee. He doesn't need a bank account to retrieve the money.

More than 5.5 million Filipinos now use their cellphones as virtual wallets

Mobile banking services, which are also catching on in Kenya and South Africa, enable people who don't have bank accounts to transfer money easily, quickly and safely.

The Philippine system relies on simple text messages

The 41 million cellphone users in the Philippines are avid texters.

The Philippines' two biggest mobile service providers ... have harnessed this penchant for text messaging to enable consumers to enter the world of e-commerce.

Aside from transferring cash and making purchases, both [providers] also allow their users to pay bills with their phones. Anna Tiangco said she pays her family's electric bills in San Miguel from Hong Kong via text messages, just like she sends money.

The Official Mobile Security Blogspot has published another story by MyMobiSafe® founder Eric Everson discussing mobile security and why it has become such a "hot topic of concern". The article is entitled What Is the Threat: Truth About Cell Phone Security; in this article several key points are made:
One must first begin to understand that what is considered a “basic” cell phone today was considered an advanced computing cell phone just a few years ago.

Wireless service providers have invested hundreds of millions of dollars on protecting their networks, but have done little if anything to provide protection at the handset level for their customers.

Much like the computer industry, the cell phone handset industry is under constant pressure to produce the next evolution of handset with advanced features of processing speed, connectivity, reception, battery life, memory, etc. This quest for the next great phone has resulted in blinding developments at a handset manufacturer’s level which has unfortunately left a gaping hole in mobile security.

If you wouldn’t feel safe running your computer without an antivirus/firewall then you shouldn’t feel safe without a mobile security solution either. There is no debate about “if” there is a threat to mobile phones, so take responsibility for your handset where your wireless provider has left you vulnerable.

9.12.2007
cell phone digest® published a story on MyMobiSafe® discussing cell phone security; the following are quotes from the story:
... unlike a computer that can run by hardwire to protect it, your cell phone cannot. Wireless makes your cell phone accessible to anyone with the right tools.

Experts believe that without the same kinds of firewalls that are recommended for PCs, you could be inviting unwanted strangers into your home.

MyMobiSafe is a mobile security solution that creates a line of defense between your phone and viruses. MyMobiSafe is the only mobile security software that works to protect all phones.

[MyMobiSafe® is a] ... solution to manage your mobile security real-time no matter where you live in the world.

9.5.2007
In an article entitled Mobile Torrents A Cell Phone Security Nightmare, mobile security guru Eric Everson identifies an emerging threat to the security methods put in place by wireless security providers. This threat is called "mobile torrents".

Here are some key quotes from the article:
In the depths of the connected mobile hacker community there are avid coders working to make mobile torrents a reality.

For cell phone owner’s mobile torrents represent incredible access to mobile applications and other content, but for mobile security providers mobile torrents will be a security nightmare.

Generally speaking, wireless service providers have invested millions to protect the network level security with little regard for handset level security.

Mobile torrents are one thing that could literally render millions of dollars invested in network level security completely useless [because they]... open cell phone interconnectivity like never before [at the customer handset level].

MyMobiSafe was built to provide mobile security at the customer handset level [and thus provides a level of security not even offered by wireless providers today].

The future of mobile security will be fought at the handset level; are you ready?

8.21.2007
inbabble, an international internet resource for mobile applications and content, interviews MyMobiSafe® founder Eric Everson on mobile security and antivirus protection...

Here are some key quotes from the article:
What makes cell phones most susceptible to threats is the interconnectivity of the mobile environment. Referring back to the six degrees of separation concept, we are all essentially connected through our phones. At a global level, wireless service providers have focused on network security with little to no focus at the customer handset level. This coupled with many other environs specific to the mobile industry has created a gaping hole in mobile security that we have developed MyMobiSafe to mend.

As for the severity of mobile threats, the risk is real for all cell phone owners. Some security “experts” say that mobile security today is where computer security was ten years ago. The thing that these “experts” neglect is the advances in mobile handset technology that essentially make them mini-computers. Computer threats are well established making the migration to the mobile environment a smooth and rapid transition.

From our initial research, we can already conclude that there are millions of phones that have been infected and the owners have no idea.

Mobile threats are much more stealth than computer threats, so finding mobile security should be a real priority for every cell phone owner.

MyMobiSafe incorporates encryption-based protocol which gives us the greatest handset compatibility in the entire mobile security industry.

As posted on the Official Mobile Security blog on blogspot, it’s finally becoming public knowledge that the average cell phone just isn’t that safe anymore...
With advances in mobile snoopware many of today’s most popular cell phones can be easily hacked. One of the many frightening attributes of mobile snoopware that seems to be stimulating media attention is the ability to remotely activate the camera/microphone features of cell phones.

Snoopware technology is not just a threat to SmartPhones, but all mobile devices. Mobile security is becoming a leading issue in the mobile community. Considering the reliance the general population has on mobile communications, the time to act is now to take steps to protect mobile security.

If you own a cell phone take some time to review your mobile security options.

As posted on ZDNet UK MobileTech Security blog, mobile security threats are increasing at an alarming rate...
It amazes me how often I get surprised reactions from people that have no idea threats are out there targeting cell phones. The common response, as you have likely guessed from the title of this entry “What? Those Really Exist?” Though I hate to be the bearer of bad news, mobile threats are increasing at an alarming rate. The days have passed when only those with Bluetooth capabilities built into their phones are the only mobile users at risk. At MyMobiSafe.com, as we continue to uncover increasing numbers of mobile viruses it makes us shutter to think about how many mobile users will fall victim to their fury. The scariest element of a viral attack is the interconnectivity that mobile phones have.

These results of MyMobiSafe.com has been noted in several publications:

7.22.2007
MyMobiSafe was mentioned in a major publication's magazine article (ComputerWorld ) discussing "A new generation of 'snoopware' listens, watches and spies through cell phones".

For most of a century, nosey people, both professional and amateur, have used microphones and cameras to listen to and watch unsuspecting targets.

In recent years, the miniaturization of electronics has enabled these devices to be hidden. Extreme drops in price have made spy electronics available to anyone, even creepy stalker types. The only remaining challenge is placement: If anyone wants to capture the juicy tidbits, they've got to have a microphone or camera in the right place at the right time.

Enter the camera phone, a dream come true for not just spies but a new breed of "cell phone stalkers."

Camera phones contain all the necessary ingredients for completely invasive stalking: a microphone, camera, personal data on the user, location information, a chat and call history -- you name it. And victims carry them everywhere they go.

All that's missing is the software that lets stalkers take control. This new software, called snoopware, does just that. Snoopware -- both legal and illegal -- enables stalkers to secretly seize control of a phone's electronics to listen, watch and spy on their victims.

Welcome to the creepy new world of cell phone stalking....

Snoopware is on the rise, mostly because of the increasing sophistication of phones. They're like mini-PCs. Most snoopware attacks have taken place in Europe and Asia. But they're coming to America.

Security experts estimate that there are more than 400 types of snoopware (most of them variants of a few major snoopware programs), and that figure may top 1,000 by the end of the year.

Your typical new snoopware program might enable someone to listen to phone calls and read e-mail and text messages, or steal contacts and other data. Some snoopware can use your phone's microphone to listen, even when the phone is supposedly "off." Other programs can capture images from a camera phone's camera.

How to beat cell phone stalkers

The best cure is prevention. Don't allow strangers to gain access to your phone... It's trivially easy to stop them...

Let me count the ways:

1. Buy an anti-malware application
from vendors like ... MyMobiSafe and others...

7.20.2007
MyMobiSafe was recently listed in a CIO-Worldnews article on the need for cell phone security: The stalker in your pocket.

In suggesting ways on how to protect yourself and your phone, the first way listed says "Buy an antimalware application from vendors like ... MyMobiSafe and others."

7.13.2007
MyMobiSafe, LLC has been selected as 1 of only 25 startup companies in the world to participate in the Spigit.com beta launch; a new social networking/business development program. This program is much like a game where the MyMobiSafe brand will be taken through various virtual stages/milestones.

Eric Everson, founder of MyMobiSafe®, has been communicating with the Spigit Founders and they are all very committed to the success of this new program; they are committed to helping MyMobiSafe® grow as it will validate their “Spigit” concept. Spigit is a well connected social networking venture and they are sponsoring various tradeshows/events. They are a primary sponsor of the upcoming Fortune iMeme event.

7.12.2007
Eric Everson has been engaged by a university project group to support the development of a utility binary set for the iPhone. This project has been commissioned by the university and is licensed through an Apple Open Source License. The project will facilitate the adoption of third-party applications for the iPhone.

7.07.2007
The Wall Street Journal recently referenced MyMobiSafe® and quoted founder Eric Everson in an article entitled "Dial V for Virus: the lowdown on cellphone attacks". While the article failed to acknowledge the recent news of everyday people being affected by cell phone virus attacks (e.g., as published by FoxNews, NBC, and MSNBC), and the corresponding need for virus protection including MyMobiSafe®, the article does note the growing potential for risk and exposure for everyday people: “As cellphones [continue to] get smarter and we do more with them, ... it is inevitable that they will attract the [increased] attention of the same sleazeballs who inhabit the computer-virus world...” More importantly for MyMobiSafe®, the article validates Eric Everson as a recognized resource in the global mobile security community.

7.01.2007

FoxNews reports on the growing reality of cell phone viruses being used to invade people's privacy.
These reports are no longer constrained to the previously exclusive knowledge-base of the “security publication” domain; they are now beginning to enter into the public media as the reality of these risks is experienced by people today…

Here are a few key quotes from the FoxNews article:
  • A stalker is on the loose — and may be watching and listening in your bedroom, bathroom or office meeting.
  • [a personal] cell phone provided a portal through which a hacker gained access to the most intimate details of [the cell phone owners'] life, recording family members' conversations and snapping pictures of what they were wearing.
  • Kuykendall, who is working with police, said when he reported the activity to his provider, he was not taken seriously. "They said it wasn’t possible; it’s not happening…"
  • switching phones and other steps have not put an end to the privacy invasion.
  • Security expert Paul Miller said it is not uncommon to receive such reports.
  • “The phone will be used to capture the pictures and the sounds around it and then they’re shipped out over the air to some sort of Web site where the people can look at it,” said Miller, a cell phone security expert.
  • “We’ve seen the applications become viruses that affect people’s phones and do allow you to invade a person’s life,”
  • “A lot of people forget that the mobile device on your hip is a computer these days and it’s always with you; it’s always a risk."
MyMobiSafe® recommends you protect your cell phone using the complete protection available through MyMobiSafe.com.
But even if you don't choose MyMobiSafe®, please do get some kind of protection...

6.22.2007
NBC News and MSNBC present an IMPORTANT news article on cell phone hackers.
Please watch this MSNBC video because the issue is real.   "Real-Life Horror. Families stalked with cell phones".
There's a brief ad at the start, but the following 2 minutes and 16 seconds are critical for us all to hear...

Here are a few key quotes from the video:
  • [Computer programs available to the public] can be used to hijack your phone... even if you've turned the power off.
  • Whether you're on a phone call or not, snoop-ware can activate the microphone and listen in on the conversation.
  • "They're listening to us and recording us... We know because they record us and play it back as a voice mail."
  • Sound hard to believe? That's what the phone company claims.
  • But security experts say that what [the family] has been going through really happens.
  • Clearly we've established that it can happen... we've been talking about exactly this kind of attack for about a year now.
  • Remember the cell phone you carry around is actually a small computer... Experts say that without the same kinds of firewalls that are recommended for PCs, you could be inviting some unwanted strangers into your home.
MyMobiSafe® recommends you protect your cell phone using the complete protection available through MyMobiSafe.com.
But even if you don't choose MyMobiSafe®, please do get some kind of protection...
